Barrandov’s Treasure Trove
30.5.2008 - PREMIERE Page 49 Clothes Make a Person
ARE YOU LOOKING FOR SEVENTEENTH CENTURY KNICKERS? NOT A PROBLEM – PLEASE HELP YOURSELF. BARRANDOV STUDIOS JUST ALSO HAPPENS TO HAVE A COSTUMES COLLECTION THAT CAN LEND YOU JUST ABOUT ANYTHING AND CLOTHE YOUR FILM FROM HEAD TO TOE.
FULL SERVICES
While most European collections are standalone costume rental agencies, on the famed Barrandov Hill you’ll find soundstages, film laboratories and two buildings, measuring a total of 12,000 square meters and filled with clothing, accessories and various props, all in one place.
THE HEART OF FILMMAKING EUROPE
You won’t find another collection that has a more abundant inventory in all of Central Europe. Our local services are used not only by Czech productions and the European filmmakers who shoot at Barrandov but, according to Věra Krátká, the head of the Costumes Division, artists and architects from throughout Europe come to Barrandov in order to fit out their projects.
FROM THE CZECH REPUBLIC TO THE ENDS OF THE EARTH
The French rented some of our costumes for filming “Tropique Amers”, a historical series that was shot in distant Cuba. However the furthest some of our collection has traveled was for the production of a Dutch drama set in the 1950s – the filmmakers took our costumes all the way to New Zealand.
A TRIP THROUGH TIME
You’ll find that Barrandov’s collection contains not only underclothing, but also hundreds of types of empire vests, Art Nouveau costumes and all types of clothing and accessories ranging from the Stone Age up through the future – all systematically arranged according to time period.
WE DON’T HAVE IT? WE’LL MAKE IT!
Just in case you can’t find exactly what you’re looking for amongst the 260 thousand items in the catalogue, our specialized Barrandov workshops have a number of tailors and seamstresses who can make anything you might need. Not only that, but there are also upholsterers, metalworkers and woodworkers.
THEY’VE DRESSED THE KING OF ENGLAND…
Barrandov’s costume collection has had a number of famous clients. Theodor Pištěk found costumes for his “Dune” sci-fi serial, as did the creators of “The Affair of the Necklace”, “Edith Piaf” and the Czech megafilms “I Served the King of England” and “Bathory”.
…AND NOT ONLY ONE
The latest sizable order is for costumes for HBO’s “The Tudors”. After garbing the first two seasons, Barrandov costumes will also make an appearance in the third cycle of the series, which is currently in its preparatory phases in Ireland. “The series won an Emmy Award for its costumes,” reminds Vera Kratka.
GUARDED LIKE GOLD
You’ll also find costumes that are of historical value – the oldest dating back to the 1950s. These include the cloak worn by the “Proud Princess” as well as outfits from “The Hop Pickers” and “Three Nuts for Cinderella”. These costumes are not rented out though – they are part of an especially cared for collection.
